Evaluate Your Display Configuration

January 1st, 2009

Happy New Year, everyone.

Michelle V. Rafter has written an interesting article about multiple monitors. She contacted me in December to obtain permission to publish some of my comments. Her article contains a healthy dose of anecdotal support for multiple displays, as well as some links to multiple display how-to information.

Rafter makes the claim that “Business people who’ve made the switch say using two monitors — or even more — make them more productive. And they swear they’d never go back.”

To me, Rafter’s article serves as a good reminder to really evaluate your computer display(s) in the new year, to determine whether you really have the optimal display configuration for the type of work you do. (Do you?)

Hey Ryan. Would love to see a picture of your workspace. I seem to always be in a fight with mine to for the best combination of monitors, OSs, chair position, etc.

Now that I’m back home I’m adding a 24″ to my existing 20″ (4:3). Thinking right now that at least one of them will be Windows XP, but use Synergy for single keyboard control – speaking of which, my Kinesis-Ergo must not have liked all the travelling. Only a few keys seem to work anymore, and thats after resetting the memory.

Hi Jason. Sure, I’ll put up a picture when I am back in Saskatoon. (My current “workspace” is a library kiosk in Palm Springs).

Sorry to hear about your keyboard. I’ve found the Kinesis stuff to be very reliable. (My original Contoured keyboard has been around the world a couple of times, and logged millions of keystrokes since 1997).

Of course, I now need two adapters to go from PC/AT -> PS/2 -> USB, and that gets a little unwieldy, so I finally upgraded to a USB version.

Hi Ryan. Your post today reminded me of this comment.. Would love to see a pic of your setup. Are you still running 5 displays or something like that?
